The Austin Independent School District has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a student murdered in the halls of her high school. 15-year-old Ortralla Mosley was stabbed to death in March 2003 by her boyfriend Marcus McTear. The stabbing happened in the hall of Reagan High School, where both Ortralla and Mr. McTear were students.
The lawsuit, filed by Ortralla's mother, claimed Title IX violations involving sexual discrimination and that the school was therefore liable for the harassment of its students by other students. Ortralla's family originally sought $23 million. The amount and terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
Mr. McTear was convicted of the murder at age 16, and is currently serving 40 years in adult prison.
